Free to Worship

It’s a beautiful Sunday morning in September. I am free to worship as I see fit. I can move freely about my town and my country. I may say whatever I wish. I do not live in fear. And even so,

“Don’t be bluffed into silence by the threats of bullies. There’s nothing they can do to your soul, your core being. Save your fear for God, who holds your entire life–body and soul–in his hands. Forget About Yourself ” (Mat. 10:28) The Message Bible

Jesus provided comfort and peace for those who are being threatened. He is a God who knows that in this world there is evil that we must confront daily. As I head off to worship this morning, I pray for these things (Mat. 5:44):

  • Healing for those who hate, including myself. It is so easy to hate those who would kill you, but Jesus never did.
  • Safety for those who fight, including our women and men in the armed forces.
  • Wisdom for those who rule; George Bush, the Pope, even the mullahs who proclaim Jihad. May the Lord break into their consciences and remind them of the rule of love…do unto others…

The easy path is to fight against those who would kill us because revenge is so sweet to us. But God says vengeance is his to deal out. How hard it is to sit and wait for the Lord’s vengeance or do discern what the Lord’s plan of vengeance is. How hard it is when those filled with hate kill those you love or hysterically dance in the streets calling for the murder of everyone who disagrees with them. May the Lord bring peace to their hearts and safety to those who must face them.
