“Firefly,” We Barely Knew Thee

One of my all-time favorite television shows has got to be Firefly. Now defunct, but still immortal on DVD, Firefly exhibited one of the best all-encompassing mythologies on TV,firefly-serenity-costumes.jpg next to Star Trek. Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy, The Vampire Slayer and Angel really created a masterpiece of a tale involving themes such as the Civil War, mercenaries, global language, technological capabilities, and some political machinations reminiscent of Star Wars. There is something both ancient and modern about these storylines and I’m so glad my son recommended we see this show. All of the characters are complex and the dialogue is very witty without being blatantly pandering. The movie Serenity nicely finishes the dangling storyline left when the networks cancelled the show. Truly unforgettable.

I recommend the DVD set of the television episodes, which can be viewed entirely in one weekend. The pilot is simply one of the best pilots I’ve seen and the episodes on the DVD are back in their proper order. For some reason, the networks decided how the order was going to be and showed most of the 13 episodes out of order. While the series begins somewhat slowly, the episodes vastly improve as they progress, with the final one deserving of an Emmy. I implore you to check this out!
